How You Can Help a Sickle Cell Mother
First way you can help
Rest – healthy blood cells can live for 120 days before new ones replace them. However, sickled shaped blood cells will live between 10 – 21 days; which will result in mom to become tired very often.
Second way you can help
Support system – since Sickle Cell Disease will cause an individual to be fatigue, additional help with daily chores can be very helpful. Babysitting for a few hours or bringing over a meal can alleviate the load.
Third way you can help
Hydration – it is important to drink plenty of water and other fluids. Sickle Cell Disease causes the red bloods cells to stick together, if the individual is not properly hydrated. Dehydration will cause a pain episode called Sickle Cell Crisis. So bring a bottle or a case of water to mom can prevent this from happen.
Fourth way you can help
Ask – please ask a Sickle Cell mom how you can help. Whether it’s giving a listening ear, help with dinner or entertaining the kids, this will help minimize her stress level.
